Home cook food has different meanings for everyone. What it means to me is the family sitting around the table trying to have a comfortable conversation with each other without having to tear each other throats out. Anyways, there are always three main elements to our family dinner: rice, soup, and a main dish. During my childhood, I hated eating at the table with the family at dinner time because I eagerly wanted to watch my Power Puff Girls cartoons while having dinner. Also as a kid, I’ve always wanted to be like those Americans family like the ones I saw on television with their plate stand, which held their food, in the living room eating their meal and watching dinner at the same time. But as I get older I started to realize that eating with my parents is very important because it’s not always going to be there.
My dad was the fabulous cook of the family. My all time favorite dish that he made occasionally during my childhood was the sweet and sour chicken. I loved that plate so much! It was one of the memorable things from my childhood. The chicken was sliced up into bitable size then pepper and salt was added to give it more of a lively flavor. Next, it would be hand powdered in flour, so that when it was fried it will have that crispy taste to it. But what made me really love the dish was the sweet and sour sauce. Oh my god, Mr. Tsuyuki you’re so right. The sauce had tiny amount of vinegar which you couldn’t taste at all, diced green onions, smashed oranges which made the majority of the sauce, and sliced pineapples. I remember which eat bite I had it had to be with a slice pineapple. It was delicious. It brings back memories and makes me want to become a kid again. I’d always thought I would be a kid forever.
These home cook meals we have with our families is important because it’s the one time out of the day that we spend quality time with each other. Where we share our daily experiences and make those key moments that we will remember for a life time. Even though I had it all my life, every time I drive back home I still enjoy eating rice and my dad’s cooking because it’s one of those things that will always be a part of me.

ReplyDeleteI agree, I love home cooked meals. I eat two or more servings, especially when my mom cooks my favorite. When my mom makes arrozcaldo, I eat like crazy. One time in particular, I ate around four or five servings of it within a hour and a half. I miss it more and more every day. Especially now because she is all the way in Los Angeles and I am here in my apartment in Long Beach. Luckily, I go back home every weekend to spend time with my family and pig out. Every Friday, she calls and asks, “What do you want me to cook?” My face lights up with a smile and most of the time I say, “Arrozcaldo please.”

I totally agree with you. During my childhood, I had the same experience of having meal on the same table with family. Nowadays, I feel like I miss the times of my childhood because the busy life totally destroyed the original shape. Unlike before, my family have dinner separately and sometimes we never get to see each other for couple days. In addition, I agree with you about how you feel when it comes to eating rice. In my childhood, I wanted to eat hamburgers or pizza rather than rice. But now, it feels like eating rice is a part of me as well.
